  • Blue to Purple: Must be able to perform routines with limited instruction & must attend 10 beginner classes
  • Purple to Red: Must be able to perform routines without instruction & must attend 15 beginner classes & perform the entire Yang 108 without instruction
  • Red to Brown: Must be able to perform routines without instruction & must attend 20 beginner classes & still be able to perform the entire Yang 108 without instruction
  • Brown to Brown/Black: Must be able to perform routines without instruction & must attend 25 beginner classes & still be able to perform the entire Yang 108 without instruction

Black Sash Requirements

  • Demonstrate proficiency in Yang 108, Yang Saber, Yang Flute, Applications, Nei Kung, 10 important points, and 8 energies
  • History and Philosopy
  • 35 leadership credits
  • Tournament credit
  • Test is usually the weekend before thanksgiving
  • Graduation is usually the first weekend of december
  • The black sash test is only once a year
  • Recommended regular test preparation outside of class starting in July of the year you plan to test. This typically involves getting together with some or all the candidates and practicing regularly, especially the partner work with someone you feel compatible with

3rd Degree and Up

  • If you're considering testing for 3rd degree or higher, schedule a meeting with Grandmaster Gohring, no later than July 4 of the year you want to test, to go over requirements
  • Typically the test will cover the most recent material from the last 2 or 3 years of your Advanced Black Sash Class
  • 50 leadership credits a year from a mix of Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Black Sash, and Push Hands Classes.
  • Participate once a year in a tournament
  • Demonstrate at Black Sash Graduations
  • Yearly rotation of the following curriculum: Chen Lao Jia, Chen Xin Jia, Wuhao 108, Chen Kwando, Chen Double Saber, Chen Pao Chui, yang straight sword, tai chi/kung fu fan form, yang long pole, eight diagram staff, kung fu spear, kung fu double butterfly knives, wudang sword, wudang staff, 2 person flute form, 2 person yang form, 2 person tiger-crane, kung fu kwon-do
